Senator Menendez

The New York Times has an editorial this morning that criticizes New Jersey's new Governor Jon Corzine for appointing Bob Menendez to fill out his term a Senator. I'm inclined to agree with them.

Whether true or not, Menendez has the reputation around the State of being a Democrat hack, tied in with all the sleezy characters that have won the Democrats a bad name in this State.

Moreover, the biggest reason that I'm disappointed with Corzine's pick is that this will almost certainly lead to Menendez's selection as the Democratic candidate to run against Tom Kean, Jr. in the next general election.

I doubt Menendez can beat Kean. Kean's young, attractive, and popular. And, if he's anything like his father, we could do a lot worse. In fact, were it not for the times we live in, I might vote for him over Menendez myself. But, given the times we live in, we can't afford to lose another seat in the Senate to the Republicans, no matter how fine a person the candidate may be.

Isn't that a sad comment on where things are today?
