Specter on Impeachment
A number of bloggers are making a good deal of the fact that Specter said "impeachment is a remedy" on Stephanopoulos' show today. Yes, as the transcript reads, he did.
No, Arlen, you're wrong. I think a whole lot of people doubt that the president is making a good-faith effort. In fact, I strongly suspect that the reason he decided to bypass FISA was because he wanted to do some spying on his political enemies. And, even if the main reason for the surveillance was to confront the terrorism threat, I'm absolutely sure that he has used the information he has gained accidently on political enemies for political purposes.
But Specter added:
Impeachment is a remedy. After impeachment, you could have a criminal prosecution, but the principal remedy, George, under our society is to pay a political price.
I don't see any talk about impeachment here. I don't think anyone doubts the president is making a good-faith effort. He's acting in a way that he feels he must.
