American diplomats in Iraq are on their own
I just saw this in a piece by Sidney Blumenthal reproduced at Americablog.
The Pentagon has informed the State Department that it will not provide security for these officials and that State should hire mercenaries for protection instead. Apparently, the U.S. military and the U.S. Foreign Service do not represent the same country in this exercise in nation-building....Obviously, the fact that we won't protect our own diplomats in Iraq is interesting on its own, but what do you suppose led to this? A rift between Rumsfeld and Rice? Rumsfeld is bitching about Rice's comment we had made "thousands of tactical mistakes." Maybe that's it.

And of course, when there is no longer a need to "promote the general welfare" at large, it follows that the general welfare of government employees is of not much value, either.
Fortunately things are going so well in Iraq these days, liberal media and Scatablog notwithstanding, all security for American diplomats will soon be handled by unarmed British bobbies, courtesy of Tony Poodle.
