The leisure society
I just came across this statistic over at Andrew Tobias' site:
That's really quite a shocking stat, even for someone like me who knows we're in really deep do do. Based on BLS (Bureau of Labor Statistics) data, that means that the number of net new jobs taken by non-immigrant Americans between March 2000 and March 2005 was only 155,430.
Oh well, let's look at the good side of this. Even though no one has jobs, the unemployment rate is only 4.7% so the rest of us aren't even looking for jobs. This is voluntary unemployment, I guess -- a sign we're becomming the leisure society.
Soon, perhaps, we'll get to the point where no home-grown Americans will haveto work.
Heck uv a job, Bushie.
According to a March 2006 report from the Center for Immigration Studies, most of these jobs are going to immigrants: "Between March 2000 and March 2005 only 9 percent of the net increase in jobs for adults (18 to 64) went to natives. This is striking because natives accounted for 61 percent of the net increase in the overall size of the 18 to 64 year old population."
