Why the Rove stories?

Updated below:

I've been thinking (a dangerous occupation in my case) about the Karl Rove stories that have been leaking out over the past week or so. I refer in particular to the story on Saturday that Rove has been informed that he will be indicted.

Where are these stories coming from? I'm sure Jason Leopold is correct when he refers to "informed sources." So, who are they?

On the one hand, I'm reasonably certain they are not coming from Patrick Fitzgerald's office. Fitz has been tight as a drum on this, and I don't think he or his team will leak anything.

Second, it isn't the type of story that would come from a leak by one of the grand jurors. They wouldn't know, for example, whether Rove had been informed or not.

So, that leaves Rove or his supporters as the only probable source. So, why would Rove be leaking stories about his impending indictment?

My guess is to lessen the impact when the indictments are actually announced. There may be a sense of, "Oh, that's old news," when it actually happens. I can't come up with any other explanation unless Jason Leopold is just making these stories up out of thin air.

Update: Talk Left has a lot more on this. According to Leopold the indictments may come down any time after Tuesday. But, Talk Left has some questions about the reliability of the story.
