Canadiana

Co-blogger, Simoneyzed in Ontario, reminds us that our "red state, blue state" dichotomy is exactly the opposite of the meaning of those colors elsewhere in the world, where blue stands for conservative and red for liberal. He goes on to say:

People from beyond America the Beautiful who read Scatablog will know that the rebellious colonists probably just became obstinate and decided to do the reverse and said OK (as in Oscar Kaiser), let's confuse Mother England. When Mom says Blue, we'll say Red; and vice-versa. And the beat goes on. Us Canajians know the difference between Red and Blue. Look what happened in Boston on December 16, 1773 (Beethoven's Birthday). At the party the revellers just dumped the tea into Boston Harbour.

Another tidbit of Canadiana......during the Parliamentary Debates in the early 1960's, prior to the proclamation of the Bill that established the Canadian Flag on March 15, 1965 (2 bands of red (one at the hoist and one at the fly) and a red maple leaf in the middle) under the Government of then Liberal Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson (father of U.N. Peacekeeping forces); Canada almost had a flag with 2 bands of blue instead and a red maple leaf in the middle, preferred by the immediately prior Progressive-Conservative Government led by Prime Minister John Diefenbaker. Both men were great rivals in the House of Commons. Anyway, as you can see the Liberals won and so the Canadian Flag is Red and White...........bet you guys didn't know that.

Beethoven was born neither on December 16 nor in 1773.
