Labor Day

Happy Labor Day.

As you enjoy this day away from work, stop to think for a moment about who you have to thank for it -- indeed, who you have to thank for all the non-religious holidays we have come to expect, for the five day work week, for the corporate health benefits most of us enjoy, for the pension plans a few of us still enjoy.

The organized labor movement.

Now that the Thuglicans have largely dismantled organized labor, they are hard at work dismantling everything the labor movement tried to do.

As someone said, "Bush is the YoYo president. You're on Your Own."

There is a place in this society for collective action. It's hard to see what will replace organized labor in giving the majority of us a say in the operation of this society, but something has to.
