How sweet it is
It's pouring rain here this morning, but the sun is shining once again. I went to bed about 11:45 EDT last night and this morning everything is about where I left it. McCaskill has won the Senate in Missouri, giving us a minimum pickup of 4, and the Montana and Virginia races have the Dems slightly ahead in both, but the margins are paper thin.
Last night I was getting sick of all the talking heads opining about how sweet and nice the new Democrats have to be, and how it's incumbent on them to take some big initiatives and push them through to move the country forward. Bull roar!
The first order of business for the Dems is not to move the country forward -- there's no way they can do that with Bush in the White House and a veto proof Senate. The first thing to do is to stop the reverse momentum of the ship of state. We're sailing off the cliff, backwards. That needs to be stopped before we can even think about moving forward. Yes, there are probably a few things the Dems can negotiate with the Thuglicans about -- e.g., immigration. Yes, the Dems should immediately pursue their "first 100 hour plan." But, not because it's going to become law. It won't. The reason is to force the Thuglicans to vote against it.
And, very high on the priority list, we need to begin the oversight process at once. That's going to be contentious. Too bad!
