The Right-Wing Spin Zone: the country showed it’s conservative streak -- NOT
This analysis at Media Matters shows what a crock that is. To the extent domestic policy had anything to do with the vote – and I think it did in the undifferentiated belief in the polls that America has been “moving in the wrong direction” -- what it shows is that liberal/progressive identification of problems and solutions for those problems appeal to a very wide swath of the country. Everyone in America who has a place to call home but is not racing in the America’s Cup is “middle class,” and virtually the entire middle class is worried about stagnant wages, the obscene income gap, outsourcing of every conceivable task to other countries, the loss of health insurance from a layoff, and a lot of other bread-and-butter issues. War and foreign policy are not supposed to be liberal or conservative issues, but the Republicans have made it so: parents in the middle class are also worried about their kids possibly having to go fight in a place where there is no end in sight to war. Suddenly, to be liberal means not having to say you’re sorry for the insults you’ve hurled at the rest of the world, by not hurling them in the first place and using our brains to fight terrorism, too.
