Dems to do something - maybe

Well, what do you know. It actually looks like the Democrats may be preparing to do something meaningful to end the war.

WASHINGTON - In a direct challenge to President Bush, House Democrats unveiled legislation Thursday requiring the withdrawal of U.S. combat troops from Iraq by the fall of next year.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (news, bio, voting record) said the deadline would be added to legislation providing nearly $100 billion the Bush administration has requested for fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.

She told reporters the measure would mark the first time the new Democratic-controlled Congress has established a "date certain" for the end of U.S. combat in the four-year-old war that has claimed the lives of more than 3,100 U.S. troops.

I hope this has real teeth in it. I wonder whether Bush will try a signing statement to get around this along the lines of, "I'll take the money, but I won't honor the deadline." What do we do then? I guess I'd say, "Impeach," but by the time the deadline has passed, it will really be too late.
