Should Gonzo go, or does the wound fester more if he stays?

While there's no question that Alberto Gonzales should not be running the DOJ, I've come to the point where I think the fact that he isn't leaving is doing the Bushies more harm than if he did. If he resigned, the press would probably lose interest in the story, even if the Dems tried to continue to pursue it. After all, it would look a bit like beating a dead horse. As long as Gonzales continues in his job, the wound continues to fester.

Of course, who knows what would eventually come out if Gonzo left? Right now he's diverting the fire from Bush.

Unfortunately, this administration has so lowered the standards for governing that we may never recover.

In addition, while others would have a better take on this than I do, I wonder if his weakness doesn't free up the remaining Justice Dept attorneys to act professionally without as much political interference.
