The anti-immigrant thing

I was just reading a piece over at Digby's site about an article by Pat Buchanan. Buchanan says he thinks Bush/Republicans have a problem because a) the number of Hispanics is growing, b) hence, the Republicans need the Hispanic vote, c) the Hispanics trend Democratic pretty heavily, d) if the Republicans try to close the borders that won't win them the Hispanic vote, but e) if the Republicans don't try to close the border that will lose them their white base.

But, since the Hispanic vote is growing rapidly, Pat concludes, "Either Bush and Rove secure the border now, or we can kiss the GOP goodbye."

Now, I begin to understand where this anti-immigrant thing comes from.
