Christiane Amanpour's phone tapped by N.S.A?
It's all over the blogosphere, but just in case you haven't heard about it, I'll summarize here. Yesterday, NBC published a transcript of an interview of NY Times reporter, James Risen, conducted by Andrea Mitchell. In the original transcript, Mitchell asked Risen whether he knew anything about the N.S.A. having tapped the phone calls of TV news reporter Christiane Amanpour. Risen said he hadn't heard that, but the issue is, where did Mitchell get the question?
NBC later edited this question out of the transcript. When asked about this, they said that that part of the interview would not be aired and that the question shouldn't have been asked until NBC had investigated the story further.
That makes the situation even more interesting. Obviously, NBC has some source that has told it that Christiane Amanpour's phone calls have been among those tapped illegally by the N.S.A. Obviously they are continuing to investigate it. If the story is true, who knows who else the N.S.A. may be tapping. Amanpour's husband? Her husband's friends? Her colleagues?
I suspect the main stream press may start to get it at last if this story proves to be true.
