I'm incensed
I thought I had signed off for the night -- had my two drinks and glass of wine with dinner. I usually don't trust myself to blog after two drinks and a glass of wine -- but.
I just finished watching Jane Harmon (D-CA) on Lehrer's Newshour. I mean, with friends like these, we don't need enemies. She said the leaks to the NY Times had done immeasurable harm to national security. When Gwen Ifle asked her weren't the leaks the only reason the hearings were taking place she ducked the question.
Look. The best Gonzales could say about why the leaks had done harm was that al Qaeda might forget about the possibility we were trying to listen to them if they didn't see it in the headlines all the time. This is the worst kind of rot. The leaks have not alerted the enemy to anything they couldn't have figured out on their own. Even now, we don't know exactly what the "program" is except that it is probably a lot bigger than even the leaks have suggested. I have assumed from the day I started the e-mail predecessor to this blog that I would be targeted by the thugs and maybe even put on the no fly list. If I, who am only exercising my right to speak my mind, can figure that out, certainly the guys who are really trying to blow things up can.
Unfortunately, (or maybe fortunately, since the Democrats like Harmon are abdicating) the Republicans seen to have picked up this issue and are challenging the White House. I don't really trust Lindsay Graham, who was also being interviewed on the program, but he was saying all the right things. He feared for the loss of our democracy. All Harmon could say was that we have to spy on all these people, but that it should be legal spying. She didn't even have a believable excuse for not having complained about the program when she was briefed about it back in 2001 or 2002. I mean, this is just inexcusable. Where are our representatives? They're all bought off by the big shots I guess.
I had to turn off the TV for fear I would throw a brick through it.
If you sense that I am pretty peed off, you've just touched the tip of the iceberg.
