Kuwaiti succession

The new Emir of Kuwait has just appointed his crown prince. Unless I read this incorrectly, the eighty-five year tradition of alternating rule between the two branches of the al Sabah family has just come to an end.

The two men are from the Al-Jaber branch of the Al-Sabah ruling family, which by tradition has been alternating the leadership of the state with the Al-Salem branch for the past 85 years.
