Ports Concern = Jingoism and Demagoguery?

David Corn, with some other left-of-center types chiming in for some less-than-outfront agenda, pompously declares that “jingoism and demagoguery are driving the story” on the Dubai Ports World story, rather than good faith policy concerns.

That is idiotic. I have no idea whether it is the case with the Michelle Malkins and “Clash of Civilization” people on the other side of the spectrum, but there is nothing racist or xenophobic about recognizing that hatred of the United States, for reasons that at minimum are historically understandable if not completely valid, and in some cases we now know most certainly are valid, is rampant throughout the Middle East. That means really, really rampant, like 90-95 per cent rampant, and it may be extra true, so it appears from some information reported, in the UAE.

That is information to take notice of. That doesn’t mean the UAE isn’t officially a valuable “ally” in the War on Terror, or that the government or the company – which I guess is one and the same -- would officially sanction any terrorist action, or that most Arabs don’t wish we could get out of Iraq, solve the Israel-Palestine problem, and all just get along. What it could mean is that, because individuals actually perform the work, more opportunities for holes and leaks might be the result . Does it really make us more vulnerable? I don’t know, but the potential consequences are severe enough to justify a few days worth of genuinely careful examination – without the cannibalistic recriminations that mostly seem intended to establish centrist cred within the Beltway circuit.

As to whether engaging this company would violate U.S. Anti-Boycott laws is a-whole-nother question. Unless you really don’t give a damn about the law, merely asking it does not make one a racist either. If the answer is yes, or even probably yes, then that should be the final word on this whole matter, regardless of the answer to the other question.

Absolutely right. All you have to do is look at what happened to the guys accused of blowing up the Cole after they were imprisoned by a friendly Arab government. No matter how friendly the government, when 90-95 percent of the populace are anti-US/pro bin Laden, it's impossible to keep them out of the picture entirely.
