Can anyone stop the rogue state?

This, via Billmon, is rather interesting. The Saudis are asking Russia to block us from nuking Iran:

RIYADH - Saudi Arabia, fearing that US military action against Iran would wreak further havoc in the region, has asked Russia to block any bid by Washington to secure UN cover for an attack, a Russian diplomat said on Tuesday.

Let's hope somebody stops us. From the sound of Sy Hersh's article, Bush is dead set on achieving regime change in Iran before his term is out. It's to be his legacy he thinks. With Cheney in power, I doubt there is any countervailing force within the US that can stop this utter idiocy.

I have a few predictions if we do bomb Iran:

1) We will not achieve regime change. The Iranians will coalesce behing their leaders to a degree we've never seen in Iran before.

2) We will not stop the Iranian nuclear effort. At best we will slow it down a year or two.

3) The Iranians will retaliate by shutting down the oil supply from the Gulf, by attacking our troops in Iraq, and possibly with terror attacks against us and our citizens the world over.

4) Other Muslim states will cease cooperating with us in the "War on Terror," and may well join that war on the other side.

5) We will be viewed as a pariah rogue-state the world over.

6) The American public will continue complacent, believing Amurkans are always the good guys.

Some legacy for Bush! $10/gallon gas.

One can almost feel for the Saudis: there is no love lost with them for Iran (see recent stories about Mubarak and other Sunnis who are worried about international Shiite loyalties to Iran). The Saudis are caught between two rogue states.

As with North Korea, the Bush administration has put this country's reputation and its national security in grave danger.
