Declaring War on the White House

In today's NY Times, Paul Krugman's op-ed takes the administration to task over its tax cut propoganda campaign. He uses the administration's own table to show that 32% of the tax savings went to the richest 1% of the population and 53% went to the richest 10%.

Then he goes on to say:

I'm sure that this column will provoke a furious counterattack from the administration, an all-out attempt to discredit my math. Yet if I'm wrong, there's an easy way to prove it: just release the raw data used to construct the table titled "Projected Share of Individual Income Taxes and Income in 2006."
That's a direct challenge, guys.

Although it's not in the printed version, the Times Select version goes on to instruct reporters on how to interpret the White House's non-response.

Memo to reporters: if the administration doesn't release those numbers, that's in effect a confession of guilt, an implicit admission that the data contradict the administration's spin.

I guess Krugman has declared all out war on the White House.

Tristero at Hullabaloo has the whole thing here.

I particularly liked Tristero's full length quotation from Sen. Grassley at the end of the article:

I am sure voters will get their fill of statistics claiming that the Bush tax cut hands out 40 percent of the benefit to the top 1 percent of the taxpayers. This is not merely misleading, it is outright false. Some folks must be under the impression that as long as something is repeated often enough, it will become true. That was how Adolf Hitler got to the top.

Hitler lied his way to the top, eh? Um, let me see . . . of whom does that remind us? Was Hitler & co. as good as The Regime is at selling its propaganda, no matter how blatant?
