Bigoted door men
My wife and I were walking out of the long-term elder care facility where my mother now resides a few minutes ago. There was a fairly large group leaving the building in front of us, and one man from the group was holding the door for them. As my wife and I approached the door behind the group, I tried to take over the door, but the man politely continued holding the door for us, jokingly saying, "I'm just the door man."
I laughed and thanked him, and would have gone on my way thinking well of the man, but he continued, saying, "I look enough like a Muslim, don't I?" as if the only thing Muslims are qualified to do is be door men.
The sheer bigotry of the comment astounded me. Had I not been so floored, I would have replied, "No, you look more like a door man."
What a sick society we are becoming when this kind of bigotry is becoming the rule rather than the exception.
