Peace Nobelist, Sam Walton

NY Times columnist and conservative hack, John Tierney, calls for John Walton to win the Nobel Peace Prize in today's column.

I don’t want to begrudge the Nobel Peace Prize won last week by the Grameen Bank and its founder, Muhammad Yunus. They deserve it. The Grameen Bank has done more than the World Bank to help the poor, and Yunus has done more than Jimmy Carter or Bono or any philanthropist.

But has he done more good than someone who never got the prize: Sam Walton? Has any organization in the world lifted more people out of poverty than Wal-Mart?

Boy, Sam Walton, what a philanthropist! And, what's really remarkable is that he's gotten rich (very rich) while doing all this good.

Oh, sorry. I forgot. That's the way the free market works, isn't it? The people who do the most good get the richest. Take Kenny Boy Lay as a case in point.

Not that I have read the article, but my impression is that Sam Walton (and co.) have done about nada to "lift people out of poverty."
Crappy wages and working conditions; no health benefits. What planet does Tierney live on?
