Saudi ambassador quits abruptly
Steve Soto at the LeftCoaster asks:
If there is something more behind this than we can see from the surface, it may be very bad news. Apparently the Cheney crowd have been pushing for the so-called "80% solution" in which the U.S. admits were in a civil war and decides to back the Shia against the Sunnis. If that occurs, the Saudis (and a lot of other Arab states) will be VERY, VERY displeased, perhaps to the point of shutting off the oil. Maybe that has something to do with it. Maybe not.
So what does it mean when the Saudi ambassador to the United States suddenly resigns and returns to Riyadh, weeks after meeting with Dick Cheney to tell him that they will be funding the Sunnis if the administration sides with the Shiites? Does anyone believe the “to spend more time with the family” reason given, or is the simple reason that Prince Turki al-Faisal is in line to be the new Foreign Minister after the first of the year?
Why would he leave suddenly?
