Bob Herbert, Manchurian Candidate for the GOP

Bob Somerby points out that Bob Herbert’s nasty 2/26 column about Clinton was unsupported by a single piece of evidence for any of the attacks on her character. Apparently, winning elections is a mark of ruthlessness and conniving. How dare Hillary employ strategy in mounting a political campaign! That just shows how contrived she is. How dare she try to figure out how to be successful in her campaign to win Democratic primaries! Apparently, Herbert thinks she should have stepped aside as soon as Obama stepped into the race – or said, “Thank you, sirs, hit me again,” with each of David Geffen’s equally absurd insults.

Another supposedly liberal writer carries water for Rush Limbaugh. Unbelievable.

By the way, for any of the Democratic candidates, each of whom is exceptionally capable but has pluses or minuses relative to the others, where there is smoke there is almost certainly not fire. The fact that her enemies have tried, with some success even with gullible liberals, to make Hillary into a "polarizing figure," does not mean she is a polarizing figure. The fact that she ran for and won a Senate seat, and now has the national name recognition to make her a formidable candidate for President, does not make her any more ambitious than any other candidate (each of whom happens to be a man, by the way). It's time to put this kind of stuff -- about any of the candidates -- to rest once and for all.

On Hillary as "polarizing": I'd been thinking about that too lately. It's just a meme: she is only polarizing because the, ahem, "vast right wing conspiracy" has so decided.

The truth is, I think, she frightens them as much as Bill did: not because she's so radical (hardly!), but because she's an intelligent and forceful moderate.
