What’s he got to hide from the people?
So Bush thinks he can claim “executive privilege” for his g-d political advisor and the White House Counsel who are being asked to testify not about their advice to the President – the legitimate subject of the executive privilege concept -- but for their actions and involvement in those actions taken by the Department of Justice.
What is he so scared of, if everything was handled properly? Why is he such a chicken? His people can’t be treated like all other Americans who has to testify under oath, and on the public record?
Glenn Greenwald has done a wonderful service cataloging Tony Snow’s many, many attacks on Clinton’s 1998 attempt to claim executive privilege in the Lewinsky matter, as well as those of other reliable Republican flunkies in the mainstream press, like Paul Gigot (if you can call the Wall Street Journal mainstream) and Kate O’Beirne. Digby also demonstrates how many times top Clinton officials testified before Congress – 31 officials on 47 occasions.
What’s really going on here is that, reinforced by Rove who sees the political advantages of Bush’s being a stand-up guy – Rove truly understands how phallic imagery sells a a particularly gullible portion of the public on Georgie's toughness in fighting terrorism and protecting us all – pretending to be a strong guy makes Bush feel good.
