Contempt of Congress
With significant questions about whether either Sara Taylor or Harriet Meyers will testify tomorrow at the Senate Judiciary Committee, despite subpoenas to do so, there are inevitably questions of contempt of Congress citations. Everyone seems to think the Dems will be successful in getting one or more contempt citations through the Senate, and I gather that for some reason the filibuster can't be used to block it, but I still don't see why people are so optimistic. There are 49 Democratic senators plus Sanders. However, one of those, Tim Johnson, is still not able to vote (as far as I know). Hence, that leaves 48 Dems plus Sanders. It seems to me highly doubtful the Dems can count on Lieberman's vote. (So far, Lieberman hasn't been willing to investigate anything and has made nasty noises about the other Dems doing so) So, even if Lieberman abstains, they are tied 49 to 49 and Dick Cheney breaks the tie -- unless, of course, there are any defectors among the Thuglicans. We'll see.
Somehow, I don't think the Dems will look very good if they can't at least get a Contempt citation through, but that may have to await developments in the House.
