Bush is always one step ahead of the Dems
Earlier today, I posted that Sen. Leahy was prepared to hold up the nomination of Mukasey until the documents the Judiciary Committee has subpoenaed have been turned over and speculated that maybe Bush wouldn't mind keeping his acting AG, Clement in place. But, now, he has replaced Clement with someone even more to his liking.
So, either the Dems confirm Mukasey quickly or we get stuck with this guy, who's much worse. Either way, the Dems lose and Bush gets to flash them the bird once again.
President Bush tucked it in at the end of his announcement this morning. The new acting attorney general will be Peter Keisler, an assistant attorney general who had just announced his own resignation and whose nomination to the D.C. Court of Appeals has been held up for months by Senate Democrats. So it will be Keisler, a diehard conservative and controversial figure, who occupies the DOJ top spot until a new AG is confirmed, instead of Solicitor General Paul Clement, who Bush first announced as acting AG last month, when Alberto Gonzales' intended resignation was made public.
So, either the Dems confirm Mukasey quickly or we get stuck with this guy, who's much worse. Either way, the Dems lose and Bush gets to flash them the bird once again.

I'm not sure that the Democrats are losing anymore on these tricks. The public and the press may finally be catching on to the cuteness and the bullying tactics. I wish they would call them out for it more provocatively, though -- "These are the kind of shady tactics we've come to expect from this president," etc. They don't get judo -- using your opponent's strength against him.
I'm not sure the media gets it yet. The NY Times didn't even mention the fact that Bush replaced the acting AG in today's article on the Mukasey appointment.
