The missing WMD -- in Iran

McClatchy News has this revelation:

WASHINGTON — Despite President Bush's claims that Iran is pursuing nuclear weapons that could trigger "World War III," experts in and out of government say there's no conclusive evidence that Tehran has an active nuclear-weapons program.

Even his own administration appears divided about the immediacy of the threat. While Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney speak of an Iranian weapons program as a fact, Bush's point man on Iran, Undersecretary of State Nicholas Burns, has attempted to ratchet down the rhetoric.

But, just like before, Hillary is out there saying, "We know they're trying to develop nuclear weapons." I believe that's almost a verbatim quote from the debate last week. Part of this is pandering to the Israeli lobby, but sometimes I really wonder if she's just a victim of the "inside the beltway" noise machine.

It reminds me of Rummy telling the news media, "We know where they're hiding them."

It's amazing all the things you can "know" that simply aren't true.
