Obama: passing the torch to a new generation?
Andrew Sullivan, former Bush supporter who has finally seen what a disaster Bush's decision to go to war was – but I’m not sure how far politically his disaffection goes -- has a fascinating take on what the Obama candidacy really means. The bottom line for him is that it promises finally to move past the cultural divide of the Vietnam War generation. He thinks that’s why so many Republicans who dislike Clinton so much seem to like Obama, even though their political views are really very similar. It also suggests an answer to what has puzzled me: why some people seem to despise Clinton so much, when I can't see what she has ever done to deserve it. I guess it was being on the "wrong side" in the 1960s and 1970s -- although it seems from another posting (can't find the link right now), basically conservative Upstate New Yorkers have more than forgiven her (67% in 2006) for such youthful antics, or decided they really weren't antics at all. Very provocative, very well written, not short, but very much worth your time.
