Why not vote really big?

DarkSyde over at Daily Kos has a great response to Taylor County, Florida's resolution to force schools to teach that "evolution is only one of several competing theories of how the universe began."

... if physical reality is something we could change merely by voting on it, why not vote big? How about "Resolved: Cancer is no longer a deadly disease and is instead less serious than a hangnail" or "We the undersigned hereby decree all people can travel faster than light anytime they want to"? If you can answer that question for cancer or relativity, you've answered it for evolutionary biology as well.

Update: Apparently similar resolutions are being proposed in many other counties in Florida. Sometimes I think we should have a war to drive all Christians out of this country. Then, I think of the many, many people I know who are sane, sensible individuals exhibiting the best of Christian values. But, then I see all these crazy evangelicals trying to dictate that the country be run their way, and I suspect the religion has done more harm to the world than good.

Resolved: conducting scientific research is only one of several ways, including prayer, to find cures for and methods to prevent diseases.
