A sign of the times
Not too long ago, politicians didn't like to be caught in outright lies, and, when they were, the press would rake them over the coals for it. Consequently, when they wanted to lie, they carefully chose their words so that they actually said one thing while conveying the opposite impression.
No longer. Now that we have been lied to for eight straight years by the Bushies, nobody seems to care anymore when politicians lie outright. McCain's campaign has been outright lying day after day now - e.g., the FBI fully vetted Palin (truth: the FBI says it did no such thing).. Occasionally, the press will point it out, but that's rare, and, even when it does, there's no sense of outrage at being lied at. It's just par for the course.
