Secy of Defense Lieberman?

God, what a horrible idea! Atrios picks up on some rumors circulating around Washington that Bush is considering replacing Rumsfeld with Joe Lieberman as Secretary of Defense. Frankly, for Bush and the Rethuglicans it would be stroke of genius. That way they could blame the progress of the war on a Democrat if things went poorly, while taking credit for anything that went well. The press would love the "bi-partisan" selection and pander to the President for it. Meanwhile, Lieberman is more Bushie than Bush, and he would do whatever he was told. The Republican governor of Connecticut would appoint a Republican to replace Lieberman in the Senate, making it that much harder to wrest control of the Senate from the Republicans. And, meanwhile, everything would go smoothly on as it has been on a course to disaster, but the dissent would be neutralized.

As I said at the outset, "God, what a horrible idea!"
