Informing the troops, with propaganda?
. . . 89% of reserves and 82% of those in the National Guard said the U.S. should leave Iraq within a year, [but only] 58% of Marines think so. Seven in ten of those in the regular Army thought the U.S. should leave Iraq in the next year.Rather disturbingly,
The wide-ranging poll also shows that 58% of those serving in country say the U.S. mission in Iraq is clear in their minds, while 42% said it is either somewhat or very unclear to them, that they have no understanding of it at all, or are unsure. While 85% said the U.S. mission is mainly “to retaliate for Saddam’s role in the 9-11 attacks,” 77% said they also believe the main or a major reason for the war was “to stop Saddam from protecting al Qaeda in Iraq.”
Got that? A majority has a "clear" sense of their mission. And 85% say that mission is to "retaliate for Saddam’s role in 9-11" and/or to "stop Saddam from protecting al Qaeda"! Lies live a long time, don't they? Especially those that emanate from the Liar-in-Chief. But he does look good in a flight suit, doesn't he?
How do our troops continue to think this way? Well, for one thing a blogsite called Wonkette reports that troops in Iraq have filtered access to Internet sites. Here's a set of sites allowed or not allowed:
- Wonkette – “Forbidden, this page (http://www.wonkette.com/) is categorized as: Forum/Bulletin Boards, Politics/Opinion.”
- Bill O’Reilly (www.billoreilly.com) – OK
- Air America (www.airamericaradio.com) – “Forbidden, this page (http://www.airamericaradio.com/) is categorized as: Internet Radio/TV, Politics/Opinion.”
- Rush Limbaugh (www.rushlimbaugh.com) – OK
- ABC News “The Note” – OK
- Website of the Al Franken Show (www.alfrankenshow.com) – “Forbidden, this page (http://www.airamericaradio.com/) is categorized as: Internet Radio/TV, Politics/Opinion.”
- G. Gordon Liddy Show (www.liddyshow.us) – OK
O'Reilly, Limbaugh, Liddy are OK! Al Franken (USO entertainer among other things!) is not. Now admittedly, this is a small set and bloggers are trying to check out other sites, and The Note is at least mainstream. But this seems to give the impression that the military is screening more left-wing sites, but giving pretty extreme right wing sites (G. Gordon Liddy!!) a pass. No wonder they still think that Saddam was involved in 9-11.
Maybe CENTCOM's blog-minding team (see an earlier post here) could provide some "very factual" and complete information about which sites are blocked or allowed and why?

Let's see, which journalist will push the professional envelope and ask Rumsfeld, or Scott McClellan, what they plan to do to educate these misguided soldiers? I won't hold my breath.
