Failed states

Juan Cole informs us that the British are pulling out of Southern Iraq, leaving it to Muktada al-Sadr's Mahdi army and the Italians plan to leave Nasiriyah soon to the Badr Corps. Everyone is already out of the Kurdish north -- so we are essentially the sole occupiers left. And, the Sunnis are the sole occupees. "Why?" Juan asks.

Meanwhile the NY Times informs us today that the U.S. is pulling out of Afghanistan, leaving it to NATO, which refuses to engage the Talliban who are taking over once again. Lovely. Soon, Osama will have his training camps back in full operation in Afghanistan.

We're certainly winning the war on terror, aren't we?
