Goss resignation not business as usual
I just thought I'd add a bit to my earlier remarks about the Porter Goss resignation. First, apparently no one at the Defense Department had any inkling this was coming down - it came to them as a complete surprise. Second, even though Tim Russert is saying Goss and Negroponte have been planning this for weeks, think about it. They haven't even named a nominee for the position. Third, think about Bush trying to get a nominee through the Senate with it looking more and more likely that the Dems will take the Senate in November. Reid can easily stall the nomination that long. This is not a time Bush/Rove would select to try to push a nominee for the CIA job through the Senate. Just think about the hearings. The Dems would insist on raising every issue you can imagine -- domestic spying, foreign gulags, torture, ... You name it, the Dems will use it.
There is just no way this was part of the reshuffling of the White House.
What will come out and when, who knows, but this was not part of the plan.
Meanwhile, I'm sure that a whole lot of CIA employees are smiling.
