Goss speculation

There are so many stories circulating about why Goss was canned that it's hard to keep them straight. Here's the U.S. News version:

Intelligence insiders say that former CIA Director Porter Goss was given less than a day to pack his bags by new White House Chief of Staff Josh Bolten, who is moving swiftly to put a new and more aggressive face on the administration.

None of this rings true to me. If this move was done to help Bush's image, it seems to me it has certainly backfired. It makes him look like an utter idiot. The nomination of Hayden to replace Goss has made it look even worse.

Of course, I suppose I should factor in the incompetence factor. The fact that they did things to achieve one result and got the opposite result is about par for the course. But, up until recently, the sole area in which they have proved to be competent is politics. So, it's still hard for me to believe they could have mis-read the politics of this so badly.

I still opt for the Hookergate explanation.
