On the Merits of sleeping in

So we're still sitting around waiting for the next shoe to drop in the Fitzgerald investigation. It seems highly unlikely to me that it would take Fitzgerald this long to decide whether to indict Karl Rove unless he has something else up his sleeve. That suggests to me that an indictment of someone, Rove or someone else (or more than one), is virtually inevitable.

I'm guessing Cheney is in Fitz's sights. Just what the delay on Rove will do to further a prosecution of Cheney is not clear. Maybe Fitz is trying push Rove into a deal to testify against Cheney. Or maybe, he's just trying to keep mum on some of the facts he can prove.

We know now that Fitzgerald intends to call Dick Cheney as a witness in the Scooter Libby trial next year. Some speculate the reason is to force Cheney to either perjure himself at trial (whereupon Fitz will indict him for perjury) or tell the truth which will probably make him liable for prosecution for leaking the identity of a CIA agent. At the very least, the truth is likely to be politically embarassing.

If Fitz knows something that Cheney doesn't know he knows, Fitz is in a much better position to catch Cheney in a lie at that trial. Perhaps an indictment of Rove would inevitably reveal some of that information. Hence, a decision to delay the Rove indictment until after he's trapped Cheney might make sense.

This is all speculation, of course, but what else is there to do on a rainy, cold Saturday morning? Ah yes, if I were still young, I would sleep in, but my body just won't sleep in anymore.
