A bad idea that could backfire

Talking Points Memo reader CB says this:

The President has handed the Democrats a gift. They have to consistently and daily say: "The President said that getting the guy who masterminded 9/11 is not a top priority, if you elect a Democratic Congress, we will make it a top priority. That is what is riding on this election. If you want Bin Laden captured or killed (need to use the word "killed"), you have to vote for a change." Over and over and over again.
I've heard a lot of people saying this kind of thing, but I believe it's very very dangerous. Just think how it would blow up in our faces if Bush suddenly pulled an Osama out of his hat in late October. It will be bad enough anyway if he does, but we'd be really set up if we build our campaign on this.

Frankly, while it would be nice to get Osama to extract some vengance, it probably isn't all that important from the point of view of protecting the country. The terrorists will survive with or without bin Laden.
