Pelosi-Murtha

There seem to be two opposing theories circulating about Nancy Pelosi's decision to endorse Murtha for majority leader. One theory has it that Pelosi is taking a bold courageous move to prove her manhood. Under this theory, this is a fight to the death. Should she lose, she will be permanently weakened. Under the other theory, Pelosi doesn't really care who wins and will not fight hard on Murtha's behalf. She did it only to demonstrate her friendship for Murtha but waited until after the votes had already solidified for Hoyer.

I have a feeling the second theory fits the facts a bit better than the first. Hoyer doesn't seem to be terribly upset or embittered by Pelosi's endorsement of Murtha. He even said some nice things about Pelosi.

Unless it cuts Pelosi off at the knees, I rather hope Murtha loses this battle. I don't think he's the greatest choice for majority leader. He has a reputation of favoring pork and using earmarks to the hilt that we don't want clouding the Democrats' image as they take over the House. And, I don't think he's that great a spokesperson for the party in front of the cameras. For that matter, though, who is?

For another take on this, see Mahablog. She starts off a bit diffidently, but comes down on Murtha's side pretty firmly.

I think part of the issue will ride on how much focus opposition to the Iraq war merits. Hoyer remains supportive of the involvement.
