The wrong message to start off with
I have to agree with Josh Marshall on this. Charlie Rangel's abortive call to reinstitute the draft and Barney Frank's plan to lead off in January with an investigation of "don't ask, don't tell" are lousy ways to start the Democrats off. These are both highly charged and largely unpopular issues, and to have them be the first things out of the Democrats' mouths after winning the election is truly unfortunate. What people want the Dems to tackle is a) the war, b) corruption, and c) oversight of the out-of-control Bush administration. Start with that. It's more than enough to keep you busy!

No, the very first thing is minimum wage, which can be adopted on the first day. Start with an easy victory. The war and oversight and habeas corpus are more difficult. They should be started immediately, however. Agree, though, that Frank and Rangel things are not optimal start.
