"Justice is far from us"-- a Bible lesson

Religious belief is often claimed as a hallmark of The Regime and the right wing. One hears a lot about "biblical values"-- mostly about the sexual habits of . . . other people. Of course, "justice" is a biblical value, and one would have thought that folk anticipating Raptures and such might be concerned about such things.

After yesterday's Seante hearing, it is pretty clear that the so-called Department of Justice is merely an arm of the political interests of a ruling elite. "Justice" is just a cover. The most telling indication of this was Sen. Whitehouse's comparative chart of the patterns of communication between the White House and the DOJ (see John Dean, in FindLaw, h/t commenter sysprog at Greenwald's site):
  • Clinton administration, "4 people in the White House (the President, Vice President, chief of staff, and White House counsel) could speak with 3 people in the Justice Department (the Attorney General, the Deputy Attorney and the Associate Attorney General) - period."
  • Bush White House, "417 people could speak with 30 different people in the Justice Department. "

As Dean comments, "this information shows that, in this Administration, the Department of Justice has become a mere political appendage of the White House."

The biblical prophets speak about the perversion of justice many times in the strongest of language. Here's one instance, from Isaiah 59:3-8 (entire chapter, here):

For your hands are defiled with blood,
and your fingers with iniquity;
your lips have spoken lies,
your tongue mutters wickedness.
No one brings suit justly,
no one goes to law honestly;
they rely on empty pleas, they speak lies,
conceiving mischief and begetting iniquity.
They hatch adders’ eggs,
and weave the spider’s web;
whoever eats their eggs dies,
and the crushed egg hatches out a viper.
Their webs cannot serve as clothing;
they cannot cover themselves with what they make.
Their works are works of iniquity,
and deeds of violence are in their hands.
Their feet run to evil,
and they rush to shed innocent blood;
their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity,
desolation and destruction are in their highways.
The way of peace they do not know,
and there is no justice in their paths.
Their roads they have made crooked;
no one who walks in them knows peace.

Covers the waterfront for The Regime, just about: injustice, lies, violence. A caveat-- the prophet soon turns to first person, plural language and assigns responsibilty for the situation to the entire nation. "We, the people" elected these miscreants (more or less).

I am prompted to add to ChiTom’s Bible lesson (which perhaps needs no addition) by the fact that some of my most favorite Bible verses come from Isaiah 58 and precede the ones quoted in his Bible lesson. The Chapter 59 verses in ChiTom’s Bible lesson describe what we should neither do ourselves nor accept from our government officials. The Chapter 58 verses quoted below begin the same way but then describe what we – like the Israelites -- should do and the results we can expect. I like that balance.

After the return of Israel from exile in Babylon, people asked God these questions: “Why do we fast, but you do not see? Why humble ourselves, but you do not notice?”

The following is the answer they received about their outward religious observances that lacked the underpinning of compassionate deeds:
Look, you serve your own interest on your fast day, and oppress all your workers. Look, you fast only to quarrel and to fight and to strike with a wicked fist. Such fasting as you do today will not make your voice heard on high. Is such the fast that I choose, a day to humble oneself? Is it to bow down the head like a bulrush, and to lie in sackcloth and ashes? Will you call this a fast, a day acceptable to the LORD? Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of injustice, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover them, and not to hide yourself from your own kin?

The following promise was made to the Israelites who acted in ways that foster peace and justice:
Then your light shall break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall spring up quickly; your vindicator shall go before you, the glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard. Then you shall call, and the LORD will answer; you shall cry for help, and he will say, “Here I am.”
