Scuttling supply-side scenarios

Interesting reading at Mahablog, at least to this economics layperson:
  1. Shameless Hustles and Tax Cuts: a response to a WSJ editorial by Fred Thompson touting the magic of tax cuts, with a fascinating history of tax cuts and their effects going back to Coolidge. The magic is all sleight-in-hand, as far as she's converned. Interesting links, too.
  2. Dems: Back to the Future: elaborating on a Boston Globe op-ed by Robert Kuttner, "Conservatism's third failure", both calling for a genuinely liberal, Democratic presidential candidate to succeed the current disaster. Quoth Kuttner: "The forces of privilege and inequality are now so deeply entrenched in America that it will take a Democratic successor at least as bold as FDR or LBJ to change course." Maha adds her characteristic historical perspective and a blogger's slightly more forceful rhetoric.
