Iraqi sovereignty
What if the Iraqis, in the exercise of their sovereignty, decide they don’t want an “enduring relationship” with us? Maybe the anger of the Iraqi people (which, by the way, is truly likely to be enduring) will force the Iraqi government not only to want all our soldiers gone, but to cut all ties with the U.S., diplomatic as well as military. Then what? What happens to that obscene Taj Mahal of an embassy we’ve built? Of course, we’ve rigged it, so they aren’t really sovereign, or at least we think we have. That embassy is really a colonial office, where in the Bush-Cheney plan, we will continue to run the country. Do we have a Plan B for that building that allows for the Iraqis to control it? So we can, if Iraq allows us to have one – i.e., does not sever diplomatic relations -- move our embassy to more suitable quarters? Of course we don’t. Bush and Cheney could not care less about what the Iraqis want. Some blogger asked yesterday to be reminded of how many of our soldiers are getting killed by snipers and roadside bombs in South Korea, or Germany, or Japan, every month. Hey, say master historians Bush and Cheney, we’ve been there a long time, haven’t we?
By definition, we cannot “succeed” until Iraq has complete sovereignty, with a government that can run the country’s affairs without being propped up by our military. But we can’t allow them to have sovereignty because if they aren’t under our control they might demand that we get the hell out of there lock, stock and barrel, immediately if not sooner. It’s impossible to exaggerate what a mucking fess these guys have created for us and our kids! The American people other than the mainstream press are starting to get that – yeah, a lot of Americans aren’t terribly swift, hah, hah, Dick said to George -- so maybe we can drum up a distraction with Iran – just planes, rockets and bombs, no soldiers getting killed. None of ours, that is, but as many of theirs as possible. It was so cool when we did that shock-and-awe thing before. It got me really pumped, says George, and Americans dig that kind of thing.
What does “blowback” mean, anyway?
