Mixed feelings

At this point, I have mixed feelings about the Mukasey nomination. On the one hand, he's almost certainly better than the hack that Bush has put in there as acting Attorney General, and I suspect that Bush would love nothing better than having the Senate turn down Mukasey so that he could simply leave his hack on the job for most of the rest of his term.

On the other hand, if the Senate Judiciary committee lets Mukasey through to the full Senate, the vote in favor of Mukasey on the floor is likely to be overwhelming, with lots of Democrats joining a unanimous Republican front in favor of the man. That kind of ringing endorsement for a man who won't call torture torture and who believes the President is above the law (at least as Congress writes it) would be horrible as well. Bush would, of course, treat it like a mandate in favor of his most extreme claims to absolute power.

So, as I send, I have mixed feelings. There really aren't any really good solutions apart from Dennis Kucinich's -- impeachment, which, of course, is off the table.

Why oh why do we have such a weak-kneed Democratic party?
