The big, bad Bush growls and the Democrats turn tail and run - again

The Democrats had planned two bring the SCHIP bill up for another vote, but Bush threatened a veto, the Democrats counted votes and concluded they couldn't override, so they turned tail and ran.

WASHINGTON — Congressional Democrats have scrapped plans for another vote on expansion of the Children’s Health Insurance Program, thus sparing Republicans from a politically difficult vote just weeks before elections this fall.

Before the summer recess, Democrats had vowed repeatedly to force another vote on the popular program. But Democrats say they have shifted course, after concluding that President Bush would not sign their legislation and that they could not override his likely veto.

So, instead of being able to rub the Republicans noses in this by saying not only did they vote against children's health care once, they voted for it twice, the Democrats will have to stand aside while the Republicans claim the Democrats were against children's health care because their leadership failed to even bring the bill up for a vote.

Good thinking Daschle Democrats! Why not just go home and leave the Congressional ball field to the guys who want to play hard ball. You can always play softball with your sister in your own back yard.
