We're all in this together
Thanks to Billmon for reflecting on the demographics of the recent election, "Still the White People's Party". As he points out, the GOP won an overall majority of the votes of the self-identified "white" voters on Tuesday, both men (53%) and women (50%), with still higher percentages in the South.
Which means the Democrats once again owe a great big thank you to the African-American and Hispanic voters of this country. Without them, the Rovians would still hold supreme power -- and would have a fair prospect of preserving their 51% majority in perpetuity.[and then in an updated supplement:]
Several readers have pointed out that I neglected to mention the contribution of Native American voters, who aren't broken down in the exit poll data but definitely played a critical role in a critical state. No Native American votes, no Sen. Jon Tester, no Sen. Jon Tester, no Democratic Senate.Rightly, I fear, Billmon wonders whether the concerns of these voters for social and economic justice will be addressed. We'll see. Hopefully, there will be an improvement at least.
