Bush's war powers

Kevin Drum doesn't think the President can attack Iran without Congressional consent. Consequently, he thinks Bush will ask Congress to consent, and he warns the Democrats to be prepared.

No guys. It's worse than that. Under the Bush/Cheney doctrine, the President can do anything he wants to under the rubric of "protecting America." Everything the President and Cheney have been saying all along has to tell you that.

Further, even under the War Powers Act, he can respond to a provocation for 60 days before seeking Congressional approval. Lyndon Johnson proved that it's simple enough to trump up a provocation. But, Bush doesn't even believe he's bound by the War Powers Act.

Once he's invaded Iran, it will be too late for Congress to stop him. Nobody will have the guts to stop him once we're already at war.

So, what the Dems need to do is stop him in advance. Unfortunately, I doubt that is likely.

Get ready for a really ugly war with Iran, folks.
