Wearing your politics on your sleeve

I've always suspected that most of the magnetic yellow ribbons people stick on their cars had nothing at all to do with supporting the troops and a lot to do with supporting the war and George Bush. This article would seem to confirm that:

For three years after the invasion of Iraq it was impossible to drive far in middle America without seeing a car displaying a magnetic yellow ribbon.

The magnets, bearing the slogan "Support Our Troops", became a symbol of patriotism for millions.

But as support for the war fades, demand for the ribbons has collapsed.

Obviously, some of those who sported these symbols were genuinely concerned about the troops, but it appears most were trying to wear their politics on their sleeves, a bit like the Republican-owned American flag in the lapel.
