Page hot line unattended

Raw Story reports that the emergency response line set up by House Speaker Hastert for pages to report suspicious activity has a) no live person answering the phone and b) no follow-up as to whether tips left on the answering machine are actually acted upon.

The line itself, run by the Office of the Clerk, encourages callers with "information regarding former Congressman Mark Foley and his contacts or communications with any current or former House Pages, or any other information or concern about the House Page program" to leave their name and information on a message machine. It also reminds callers that, "information concerning the Foley matter or other similar activities will be shared with the appropriate authorities."

...

Collins was, however, able to confirm that no oversight system exists to ensure that the tips themselves are met with responsible stewardship. "They're just going to be sent to the proper authorities," she explained.

This sure doesn't sound like a serious effort to correct the situation to me. If these were my kids, I'd want better assurances than this.
