Crucifying Jimmy Carter

As usual, the Jewish lobby has decided to crucify Jimmy Carter for telling the truth about the occupied territories. Unless you state that every Jew and every Israeli policy is pure and spotless, while every Arab and every Palestinian action is evil, you get accused of being an anti-semite. It's just a knee-jerk reaction in this country, and unfortunately the public and, therefore, the politicians buy into it.

The writings of ex-Democratic President Jimmy Carter have prompted 14 Jewish members of a foundation named for him to resign, according to a report in the Jewish Telegraphic Agency today.

Sorry, but the Jewish State isn't perfect. In fact, right now, it's pretty flawed. Much of what the State of Israel has been doing recently is illegal and unethical by almost any standard. The settlements in the occupied territories are in violation of U.N. Resolutions which even Israel has accepted. The "wall" has carved up Palestinian farms. Israeli settlers routinely vandalize property and kill Palestinian crops in order to drive them off the land. Israeli troops routinely shoot up Palestinian towns with little regard to distinguishing between the guilty and the innocent.

Yes, it's also true that the Palestinians have also behaved very poorly in many instances, but, frankly, given what the Israelis have done to them and the relative positions of the two groups, the Palestinians' behavior is a whole lot more understandable than the Israelis.

Sorry folks, but the facts are the facts.

Trying to figure out who is to blame for what, of course, is not the way to an answer here, but, really, subjugating an entire population to abject poverty in what amounts to a concentration camp is not likely to promote harmony.

Of course, there is always the ultimate solution -- total extermination of the Palestinians. Luckily, so far, not too many Israelis have called for that.

By the way, I'm in the middle of Carter's book right now, and it seems to me to be eminently fair and balanced. Indeed, if anything, he bends over backward to see things from the Israeli perspective.

It's next on my list, but I searched it for the attacks Mona Charren levied on it. Par for the course with the neo-conservatives, she lied, usually by pulling a sentence out of context and omitting the part where Carter describes the bad part of the Palestininans. The impression so far of excruciating effort to present a balanced picture is unmistakable. I would think most Israelis would think accusing Carter of anti-Semitism to be an absolute obscenity
